"It’s been 20 years since Santa Rosa County officials passed an ordinance outlawing nudity on public beaches. Their target was a secluded section at the east end of Navarre Beach. It had been a nude sunbathing spot since the 1960s and had attracted up to 200 people daily." Read more: Remember the nude beach? It's been 20 years since Santa Rosa lowered the boom
Related: This article about troubles at simulated nude beaches indicates that some of the same problems that occur at nude beaches around the world are now happening in the virtual reality world. In fact, the situation there with voyeurs hanging around ogling nude cartoon 'women' or those who refuse to allow their avatars be seen nude reflects the behaviour of real people. Article here: MIGHT A BATTLE BE BREWING? Now, we can understand the creeps that haunt nude beaches, and the repressed Textiles reluctant to be nude, but what kind of perverted individual goes to a cartoon world to harass cartoon nudists? Why, with all the porn online, both real and anime, would someone go to the effort to join a sim group just to be a bother to other cartoons? Community and perversion. Simply put, it's the warped social interaction that provides them the kick that merely observing doesn't provide. A still porn photo isn't as 'rewarding' as a video, live porn chat is better than that. Another option is a sim, where 'real' people can be bothered, annoyed, and leered at without fear of punishment. The next best thing to the real thing! Interestingly, some of the other troublesome folks in this simulated world appear to be people who appreciate the same nudist environment that they don't dare to indulge in, even though they're only cartoon characters. Too prudish to strip off cartoon clothes yet longing for the companionship that social nudism has to offer. We've seen those folks around in real life too, haven't we? Lonely, frightened, sick or envious; they're all attracted to something they know they can never have, but we do. Clothing Optional / Swimming Holes of US & Canada kindly posted a link on Facebook to our Nude Beaches section here on All-Nudist. We appreciated that and felt that a comment was in order. As often happens, that comment took off onto it's own direction and became much too long to post. Instead, here it is: "That's our Mazo Beach! It used to be that you could drive up to the beach, camp overnight, have campfires, swim and sun to your heart's delight! This is one of the most beautiful spots on the Wisconsin River. Cool, clean water, bluffs and surrounding forest! And... legally naked! Unfortunately, after decades of use by real nudists, the misbehavior of some who came for other reasons has caused the beach to be closed except for weekends now. And then, to get to the beach you need to park and walk a mile through the woods to get there. Legally disabled folks can still drive there, but other 70 year-old beachgoers, those with health problems or difficulty walking can either take the hike or stay home. This is, by the way, public land. Land of the free. This is a tragedy happening worldwide and as yet, no one has found a way to stop these selfish interlopers from destroying our wonderful way of enjoying nature. The typical reaction by authorities is to close a beach to nudity rather than to deal with the troublemakers. Often, political correctness plays a part. No one wants to publicly identify the social group responsible though everyone knows exactly who it is. Our national organizations do what they can, but hampered by limited funds and often different agendas that have greater priority, the average weekend nudist is left without a credible, politically effective voice. Local clubs are left to defend local issues, and we all lose in the long run. At our beach, Mazo, the Friends of Mazo Beach, along with TNS have fought to keep the beach open, but they lost this last battle before it even began. One after another, our free beaches around the world are falling to a combination of an influx of poorly behaving outsiders and social pressure against social nudity. The actions of the few are blamed on the many. Unfortunately, there is no solution. Money is the only voice in today's world, and casual nudists are not very good at spending money for an abstract cause that may not benefit them directly. When it DOES hit home, it's too late. While supporting national organizations is always a good thing to do, the fact is that not enough of us do so to enable them to mount an effective defence of our freedoms. Then, the less they are able to, the less effective they seem and the fewer people support them. Hence the decline in membership. Vicious circle. It's a downward spiral compounded by a terrible economy where it has become 'every man for himself'; "What is my membership going to get ME?" rather than "Will my membership help ALL of us?". When membership in an organization becomes a matter of getting a free t-shirt, a magazine, or a few bucks off grounds fees, the cause is lost. Membership should be a declaration of dedication to a cause; not just an incentive to save a couple of dollars. We don't know how to remedy this, and maybe it can't be fixed. Some would change the very nature of social nudism to encourage more folks to join organizations, but then, what would become of the lifestyle millions now enjoy? Flexibility and evolution is one thing; abandoning our principles to accommodate those who do not or cannot see the value in our lifestyle is not the answer We do, however need some sort of answer to the dilemma we're in, and that answer is not going to come from those who profit from social nudism, but rather from those who live it and enjoy it!. That means it's up to you, and us, or it's not going to happen." End of comment! Well, it's easy to see why that was a bit too long to post as a comment on Facebook! But it's a subject very close to home (literally) and perhaps you can forgive the rant. The fact is, what little money there is available is largely directed towards those who provide the money in the direction which will benefit them. We're talking about clubs, groups and resorts and organizations that profit from our desire to be nude among others like ourselves. That, or groups that advocate for naturism but mainly now exist primarily to perpetuate themselves. There's nothing wrong about that, but there are precious few monetary incentives for anyone to effectively advocate and lobby for those natural resources which are available to anyone who wants to just strip off and take a dip, or get a tan. If money can't be found, nothing can happen, and no one cares about those who don't pay for representation. That would be most of us! As stated before, there is no easy solution. We may be a community, we nudists/naturists, but we are cheap and shortsighted. We have in our hands the best model of social organization ever seen in the world, but we have no commitment to do that which is necessary to assure that our lifestyle will endure. We may rejoice as we see fewer and fewer restrictions on nudity on TV and in public, but in reality that has little to do with us as nudists, the easing of laws about nudity are great, but what does that have to do with the reality of social nudism? A topless woman in a city park is not a nudist; it's just a woman without her shirt on. Unfortunately, all the topless women in the world can't bring our beaches back as long as the pervs desecrate them and nudists take the blame. And we have no ability to change that scenario. Related:
"No one has preconceptions about who I am. My attire doesn't define me. I am as I show myself to be to those around me; naked and myself, as they are. My appearance matters little. I am seen only for myself! I am created anew, a rebirth where I can be as I am, not as expected to be! I can be me." This is not an uncommon sentiment among those who have discovered the myriad ways to experience social nudism! Unfortunately, it applies only among nudists! This is something we learned very quickly upon joining our socially nude community long ago. We each are accepted or rejected based solely upon how we present ourselves to the others with whom we wish to share this wonderful pastime/lifestyle. Some folks face more hurdles to be accepted, but the opportunity is there!
This would properly be an addendum, or something, but a thought occurs and it should be shared; If you get up the nerve to go to a nudist venue sometime, without being creepy just say 'Hi!' to the biggest, fattest naked woman you run into and initiate a conversation, if possible! Chat about her toy poodles or the weather, then move along. Another time you'll chat again but you know what? Your lifetime attitude about 'disgustingly fat' people has already taken a bit of a change. You'll see. Oh yeah, once you start to learn to see folk's souls and not just their bodies, it can change your whole life! The first step is to become naked among them, your neighbors in social nudism. It's a lot more than just being naked. Here's the article that inspired this comment: New Research Shows Women Stare At Boobs Just As Much As Men Quite some time ago my lady friend and I were innocently partaking of a midnight dip at a local beach long known for being quite casual, as in, topless women were not a unique phenomenon. We were quietly enjoying a summer evening when we were busted by the cops! Madison is a liberal community and very accepting of alternative lifestyles. Topless lesbians in Pride parades are not unusual nor prosecuted, frats and sororities on the lakefront are quite relaxed, undie bubble parties abound without comment. We have an annual 'Marijuana Harvest Fest' every year on the State Capitol grounds, for crying out loud! It is not illegal to be topless in Madison, though a topless woman is likely to be busted for 'disturbing the peace' if she's not a lesbian in a parade. Go figure. But skinnydipping? Somehow that has never been 'accepted' as a social norm, though it occurs here and there. No, here in the 'Athens of the Midwest'. or 'Berkely of the Midwest', something as simple and innocent as skinnydipping has never caught on. Now, Madison is a community of nearly 300,000 located on an isthmus between two large lakes adjoined to even more lakes, plus there's the University which boasts over 40,000 students. There are other colleges and schools in town too. A lot of young folks who can vote here, and the city in general reflects that. So why is it that something as simple and innocent as skinnydipping is considered taboo? There are no young naturist groups here, no one offering an insight to our lifestyle, and no interest in doing so though we've been suggesting it for years. Why not? We don't know. The closest group is a hundred miles away in the middle of nowhere and doesn't even have a website, let alone a local chapter here where all the kids are! 40,000 potential recruits to nudism and no one is bothering to do anything about it? Sorry, digressing. Back to our story of being busted by MPD. Yeah, so the cop somehow managed to hold his flashlight steady on my lady while talking to me. Hmm. Yeah, ok. Eventually he allowed us to dress while he gave a lecture about how wrong we were to think that a simple midnight dip in the lake was somehow disruptive to society and terribly offensive to all those folks who never saw us. Actually, considering where the beach is, no one COULD see us without coming down to the shoreline with a flashlight and searching... And then they'd see only our heads. Uh huh. He let us go with a warning (what a guy!), and that was the end of it. Today we might be charged and added to a sex offenders list! And we think things are getting BETTER for nudists in this country? As our economy continues to collapse and folks begin to realize that we aren't going to pull out of it this time, conservatism will once again arise as it always does in times of fear. Anything different is something to fear, and folks who can happily and easily enjoy one of 'God's' sins will be high on the list of those to fear. Hatred is a lot easier to hold, harbor, and embrace than is love and understanding, tolerance and acceptance. Keep your powder dry, folks. Pay attention to what's going on and support anything that protects our rights as nudists. Those rights are being whittled away worldwide right now, as we speak. - Steve For those who naively continue to promote the idea that non-sexual nudity isn't a turn-on for men, we offer the following funny and revealing article. 'Skin = sex = sin' in most folk's' minds. Deeply ingrained both by society and genetics, we cannot pretend that people aren't attracted to people based on skin exposure and physical appearance. The fact the nudists/naturists are able to see past this knee-jerk instinctual response doesn't change that other fact the most people are totally unable to do so. Studies have shown that men's brains function at a lower level in the mere presence of breasts, sexualy imagery is rampant everywhere it's permitted, talk shows on TV discuss every aspect of sex constantly (along with as much skin as allowed), TV and movies expose enough bare flesh to wrap the world! So let's not kid ourselves. Nudists DO see things differently and HAVE managed to alter our perspective from that of the 'norm'. We cannot now nor in the foreseeable future expect Textile society to suddenly see the light and come around to our way of seeing bare flesh. It just ain't gonna happen. Skin is sex, period. Our community has risen above that and they will never understand. IT HAPPENED TO ME: I USED A PHOTO OF MY NAKED BACK AS MY OKCUPID PROFILE PHOTO Angie and I, Steve, have never claimed to be authorities on social nudism, though sometimes we're taken to be. Our personal experience is limited to some camps and resorts in the US plus a wealth of information gleaned from others over the years, worldwide. It's probably fair to say that we're a bit more on top of things than the average nudist because of our connections, but we have never delved deeper than anyone could if they cared. And that's the point. From OUR experience, MOST folks who might fit into the category of 'nudist/naturist' don't hang around on the internet looking for nudist stuff. They just live their normal lives and get away nude when they can. Some are lucky enough to belong to a club and attend often; some have a place available to go to when they can; some have a beach available. Some are committed to a lifestyle of nudism/naturism, some see it as a weekend diversion. But the point is, most don't hang around online like some of us do. Yeah, you know who we are. Now, it's pretty obvious that we, Angie & Steve, are online and involved a LOT. You could say that we have an iron in the fire, as does anyone who deliberately goes online with a website, blog, or even just socially networks with nudist people and places. But 'online nudists' are not the weekend campfire nudist; and we shouldn't forget that. We're ok, but far from the majority. Just as the beach nudist isn't the camp nudist who isn't the resort nudist, we here online are not the rank-and-file nudist. They are largely unaware of everything that happens online unless they hear about it from an organization newsletter; and you KNOW that they will learn nothing from those. They'll get the 'party line' of whatever those groups chose to share, We talk to folks around campfires, in the pool, and over mimosas about a lot of things, and only once over the years has anyone even heard of All-Nudist.com, a website which, like it or not, cannot be overlooked in the nudist online world. Few people that we've met EVER go online for nudist stuff other than to look for a camp/resort wherever they're next vacationing. (Once when we were at camp we had to iPhone our website to show a long-time nudist where to go in his OWN STATE! He didn't know there were any nudist places to go to.) And why would they go online? They KNOW social nudism; and live it according to their own manner. What's the draw for them? Pictures of naked women? Those are everywhere for those seeking them (that's their business, but not it's not naturism). But for Fred the farmer or Mary the Mayor or Dave the ditch-digger; why? Nudism is what they do when they have the opportunity to do so. What do they care about problems at a beach in New Zealand? And why should they? All-Nudist tries to represent that mainstream 'campground' nudism that's the foundation of all else. That's where our personal experience comes from; the mom & pop, member-owned nudist camps with ordinary folks. These are the places that grew up with social nudism in America and are struggling to survive as times change. These humble camps reflect the venues spread all over Europe where nudists aren't such second-class citizens as are we here. It's a different world and a model for us. In any event, this ramble is just to remind us that we people online do NOT represent mainstream social nudism. Though All-Nudist tries wholeheartedly do do just that, we too can fall prey to the idea that mainstream nudists are represented in ANYTHING we see online. Sorry, no. Mainstream nudists are at home quietly living their lives and perhaps looking forward to their nex nude excursion. Everyone else online has an agenda to promote, including you (and us). I guess the moral of the story is, let's not let our heads get TOO big because really, nobody's listening out there in the real social nudist community. They're busy; hopefully being naked somewhere, but they're not here. Watching a segment of 'Naked and Afraid' right now, first time other than a glance, really. I realize that strife and anger are the key to keeping an audience interested, but these two people are either incredibly stupid and angry people, or they've been told to act that way. Very convincing in both regards! I'm sure they'll make up by the end of the show.. Another already had to leave because he didn't know to keep out of the tropical sun... I personally wouldn't care to be in their situation but if I was, I'd prefer to be alone rather than with either of them! Other than the (non)'nudity' aspect I don't think I'd be watching, but that's just a personal preference in entertainment. Maybe some folks will become more comfortable with nudity after seeing this, dunno. Much better than a 'nudist' show set in i swinger's resort! Glad that one never got out of the can! Don't care for Kardashians, repo men, gator hunters (well, maybe a little) either. Or 'Survivor', the original schmaltzy 'survival' non-reality show. First show, ok. The rest? ZZZZ I promise to try to catch up on this short series though, in anticipation that our Aussie friend, Nudeyman, might be on the show next season. THAT would be great! But I still don't know where they got those clothes they're wearing. Maybe I missed a convenient shipwreck, or something... And it's odd that the premise of a naked man and woman alone, naked, in a remote location sits well with American morals, but it's not ok to see them nude from thousands of miles and months away? They find water; she won't drink unboiled water (they go have a fire), he does and gets sick. What can I say? But listen, I have to go now because they're strong enough (after eating an eel) to swim to the nearby island through the sharks during a storm! Then they'll be saved! Fingers crossed! OK, I'm back. They made it (and presumably the cameraman, too)! So ok, these dumb shows are kinda fun. Plus, we only have 180 channels and there just wasn't anything else on. Insomnia is God's greatest curse! Well, there's leprosy, flesh-eating disease... ok, nevermind! But ya know, somehow as I see people wrestling alligators, catching man-eating fish, capturing man-eating snakes, and so on, I keep worrying about the cameraman... Uh, oh; another episode starting, and this one has alligators and SNAKES! Ah,,, gotta go do some more research! - steve "We're not in the business of converting people to nudism." Camp Full Monte owners Steve and Denise explain why clothing optional rather than required nudity is their preferred approach to, well, if not nudism/naturism, running their campground. They present their case well in this video.
Something not mentioned here but a vital factor in any discussion of this kind, is that venues must operate at a profit to survive. There are a lot more potential non-nudist customers available than nudist, and the clothing-optional compromise solves that problem. The result, of course, is a lessened experience for the nudist customers who go to nudist venues to get away from Textiles and the resulting discomfort that often creates. That's why most venues require nudity whenever reasonable; for the comfort of the guests. In an ideal world, all could do as they please, clothing-wise, without anyone thinking nudity to be strange, but we don't live in that world. The reality is that nudists/naturists see things differently and are quite aware that clothed people look at us from their own perspective. Regardless of how 'accepting' they may be, we nonetheless are seen as a bit odd, and being on 'exhibition' is not a comfortable feeling unless one happens to be an exibitionist. So while we respect the decision that Camp Full Monte be a Textile campground which allows those who wish to get naked to do so, we ourselves will spend our hard-earned nudist vacation money at nudist venues where we can be around folks like us, not like those we left behind at home, at work, at the store, and everywhere else that Textile society exists. We are, after all, All-Nudist! Camp Full Monte website |
